CAIRO – 14 December 2018: U.S. President Donald Trump signed a law honoring former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat Friday, on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
In August, the U.S. Senate had passed a bill to honour former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, according to a Thursday statement by the Egyptian Embassy in Washington.
“The Anwar Sadat Centennial Celebration Act S266 awards the Congressional Gold Medal to Sadat “in recognition of his historic achievements and courageous contributions to peace in the Middle East,” it added.
Muhammad Anwar el-Sadat was the third President of Egypt, serving from 15 October 1970 until his assassination by fundamentalist army officers on 6 October 1981. As President, he led Egypt in the Yom Kippur War of 1973 to regain Egypt's Sinai Peninsula – Credit: AP
The following is a copy of the congressional record:
“A bill (S. 266) to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Anwar Sadat in recognition of his heroic achievements and courageous contributions to peace in the Middle East,” The bill stated.
In September 2017, the senate hosted a ceremony to rally for the bill on the 100th anniversary of Sadat’s birth and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Camp David Accords.
